Haywood Regional Medical Center began service to this community over seventy years ago-- December 3l, l927 as Haywood County Hospital. It was the first county hospital in North Carolina to be built by taxation approved by the people.

Throughout its history, Haywood Regional Medical Center has exhibited great growth and progress. The first hospital built in Waynesville, had 75 beds. In l952, and again in l959, additions were completed, bringing the bed capacity up to l40. Subsequent renovations added 2l more beds, bringing the total to l6l.

In l979, the present 200-bed facility, located near Clyde, was completed and opened for occupancy. It has approximately 200,000 square feet of floor space and was built and furnished for approximately $l7 million. In 1995, a new Home Health building was added behind the Medical Center.

The name was changed to Haywood Regional Medical Center in 1996 to better reflect the growth of services to areas outside of Haywood County. In 1997, the Medical Center was reorganized as a Hospital Authority.
