Job Description

Education and Training: Certification as MT(ASCP) or a baccalaureate degree in appropriatelaboratory science and/or certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a specialist in the area of laboratory specialty. Perform all routine and specialized laboratory procedures, maintains quality control programs and assists the section supervisor as scheduled. Helps inventory supplies to maintain adequate stock levels. In each section of the laboratory, the medical technologist operates and maintains precision and delicate equipment. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's / area's / department's policies and procedures.

Affiliations: Membership in American Society of Clinical Pathology is desired.

Environmental and Special Demands: The laboratory provides a well lighted, heated, air conditioned and ventilated work area. Machine vibrations and noise is kept at a minimum. Exposure to infectious specimens and hazardous chemicals could occur. Equipment is provided to help protect the employee from possible infection and chemical hazards. Approximately 75% of the time is spent walking and standing. Serves on medical center committees when requested. Rotates all three shifts, weekends and holidays as assigned on the work schedule. Rotates all departments as assigned on the work schedule.May be temporarily assigned as acting supervisor in the absence of the section supervisor.Confidentiality of patient test results is essential.Responsible to: Section supervisor or shift supervisor, and through the supervisor to the Assistant Administrative Director, Administrative Director and Pathologist.
Workers Supervised: None.
Interrelationships: Works closely with patients, physicians, Pathologist, lab employees, and nursing personnel. Answers questions relating to laboratory test results, scheduling of tests and related subjects.
